Laia is a slave.

Elias is a soldier.

Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy. There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

lmao i looked back at my reading thread and man, i'm savage
i had high hopes but through it all, i was devastatingly disappointed.
do i read the same book as everyone else bcs i wonder why ppl don't have the same response as i have???????

i hate elias.
1. his mind is in the gutter 85% of the time
2. he only spends 3% of his brain on Trials which is way more important
3. i keep being informed elias is the best fighter or sth in his batch BUT HELLO WHERES THE PROOF????? THERES ONLY TALK
4. he only ever thought of girls lol for real elias ur funny
5. I don't understand why he insist on using the word 'my mother' when we all know that relationship is useless on both sides
6. theres no such thing as crush or love on elias part theres only lust. HE SENSUALLY TALKS ABOUT THE GIRLS PHYSICALS ALMOST EVERYTIME HE DESCRIBES THEM
7. elias sacrificing himself for laia is NOT love dont fight me on this even if its love sabaa tahir didnt express that part well. Ive seen enough love and that is totally not it.
8. i love helene, so when elias goes one minute thinking 'i want to wrap my hands around her hair' to 'i shouldnt and cant love her shes my bestfriend' and the next 5 minutes when helene gives her opinions elias goes all, 'i liked her better when shes not talking.' SERIOUSLY MAN? GO KILL URSELF AT THE DEEPEST PIT OF HELL

and i dislike laia. at least i don't hate her, yet.
1. the moment laia is all about saving her brother and nothing else, i know i dont like her
2. tbh her mission on rescuing her brother is annoying useless and troublesome
3. her action on the whole trusting Resistance without any doubts or questions, not until the end at least, is plain idiotic
4. she only used her ability to read ONCE throughout the spying lmao use ur brain and work harder girl
5. she's overall stupid. again, dont fight me on this.

complaints i have over the book in general
1. the Augur. or at least Cain. For someone as powerful as he is, he sure doesn't seem like it. I get zero vibes from him.
2. the Trials. it isnt extravagant as it should be. or at least thats what i think. i mean, the Trials takes up as one of the major plots but idk man it doesn't reach me
3. The Third and Fourth Trial LMAO is that a joke. someone pls write me a 1000-words essay on its relevance to the Emperor blablabla bcs IT COULDVE BEEN BETTER BUT WHY THE NEED TO KILL INNOCENT PPL URGH
4. This book promotes rapes as if it's nothing.
5. why exactly is laia and elias put together as love interest???? laia is perfect with keenan and elias with helene. why is there need for elias and laia???

there are a few things worth mentioning though
1. I understand sabaa tahir's approach on laia, making her the weakling which I think is a refreshing take from the typical YA Fantasy.
2. i also appreciate sabaa tahir for not making laia and helene fight against themselves for the useless elias bcs it would turn ugly and lmao for what really
3. helena and cook kick ass i love them. that additional 0.5 star is for them.
4. laia had some character development which is cool

im so sorry if my ruthless review accidentally offended anyone who love this book
